چکیده

Our study investigates the perceptual feature similarity between different lexicons based on visual perception of the words and theirs representation through an observation sequence. We confirm that it is possible to apply databases, which are similar in terms of morphological/perceptual features for improving the recognition task. Having selected Portuguese and French words from legal amounts for this study, we improve the recognition rate of handwritten Portuguese words by adding samples of French words to the training database. The error rate obtained in the meta-class called “dezena”/“teen” is 36.10% lesser than that obtained in previous experiments reported in the work of Freitas et al. (2001).

The Adaptation of English Initial Clusters by Persian Learners

This study presents an overview of the different strategies that Persian learners of English employ to deal with initial clusters. While vowel epenthesis appears to be the most widespread repair strategy to conform such clusters to Persian phonotactics, the location of the epenthetic vowel varies. In this paper, we investigate two approaches that seek to explain the epenthetic site. The first o...

Build Chinese Emotion Lexicons Using A Graph-based Algorithm and Multiple Resources

For sentiment analysis, lexicons play an important role in many related tasks. In this paper, aiming to build Chinese emotion lexicons for public use, we adopted a graph-based algorithm which ranks words according to a few seed emotion words. The ranking algorithm exploits the similarity between words, and uses multiple similarity metrics which can be derived from dictionaries, unlabeled corpor...

Acoustic and Perceptual Similarities between English and Korean Sibilants: Implications for Second Language Acquisition

Foreign accent has been assumed to be closely related to the degree of articulatory, acoustic and perceptual similarity between L1 and L2 sounds. This study examined cross-language acoustic and perceptual similarities between Korean and English sibilant fricatives: Korean [−tense] /s/ and [+tense] /s*/ vs. English alveolar /s/ and palato-alveolar /ʃ/. To determine acoustic similarity, two param...

Bilingual lexicon extraction from comparable corpora using in-domain terms

Many existing methods for bilingual lexicon learning from comparable corpora are based on similarity of context vectors. These methods suffer from noisy vectors that greatly affect their accuracy. We introduce a method for filtering this noise allowing highly accurate learning of bilingual lexicons. Our method is based on the notion of in-domain terms which can be thought of as the most importa...

Semantic and Perceptual Representations of Color

Perceptual psychology widely operationalizes color appearance as a construct with very close, even isomorphic, ties to color naming structure. Indeed, a considerable body of psychological and psychophysics research uses naming–based tasks to derive structural properties of color appearance space. New research investigating the relations linking color similarity and color naming structures sugge...
